touchdown

Well, we were sad to say our goodbyes to magical Asturias for this year... but at the same time we were excited to get to Bizkaia and spend time with family and friends and do all things Basque (i.e. eat, drink and be merry) once again!

First stop: Gallarta, to stay for a few days with Abuela and Uncle Nacho :)

Nora was eager to see her "Irish cousins" again, so Luis, Saioa and the girls came over from Donosti for the day!

And Uncle Javier came as well...

with cousin Oliver, who seems to have suddenly turned into a grown-up!
Of course, the playground in Gallarta received a few visits from us. The boys played happily in the summer sun, under the watchful eye of Dolores, la pasionaria.
Friends were made and races were run...

That Sunday after lunch, we took an afternoon trip to Getxo... with Luis and their gang in their fancy new car ;)

... across the Puente de Bizkaia hanging bridge,

... to Algorta's Ereaga beach.

Ice-cream from Aberasturi, of course :)

mmmm

a walk on the beach...
and along the seafront...

...to the playground!!

While some were swinging on swings, Maia was just chilling on the grass...

Cute or what?

pirates of ribadesella

Our time in Asturias was coming to an end, so we went back into Ribadesella for one last visit. The summer festivities were underway and there was a cool kid's play area set up in a square in town! They had all sorts of fun toys for all the kids to try out and share.

Stuff to ride...

... to bounce

to fling around (or whatever it is you're supposed to do with a diabolo)...

... more bouncing

...and there were also stilts, a giant Connect 4 and funny 4-wheeled skate-type things that were impossible to balance on!

Afterwards, we headed towards the port...

...stopping to view the stalls along the way

... and drool over the goodies ;)

we got ourselves some refreshments,

...and then treated ourselves to these cute handmade clay necklaces as a souvenir of our holiday!

The paleolithic horse for Malachy, a dinosaur footprint for Liam, the circle of life for me and the scallop shell of Santiago for Jaime.

The best part of that day? The Pirate Market being held in the port of Ribadesella!!

As you can imagine, this was a pretty big hit with the lads. Above are a few scenes from just some of the stalls we visited that day.

And so ends our Asturian adventures '08.

Next stop: Gallarta, la Abuela, etc., etc., etc.......

Watch this space.

new friend

This is Brendan! Despite his very Irish name, he's actually from Asturias. Himself and Liam struck up a great friendship while we were staying in Llames and we even met up with Brendan and his folks again in Bilbao at the end of our holidays too!

As you can see these boys have lots in common!

The boys playing ball in our corral.

Even Lorcan got a kick out of the fun :)

And we played "El Juego de la Oca" too!

To Brendan, Beatriz and Manuel... I hope you get to see this... and that we get to see you again next summer!... Besos

cuevas de mar

Here are some pics taken at the beautiful beach of Cuevas de Mar, where we spent a day this summer.
I don't think they need any words...

And back to Guadamía beach and surroundings... where we were savouring our last few days...
